The Statistical Case Against Cabrera for M.V.P.

On Thursday, the American League will announce the recipient of its Most Valuable Player award. The winner is likely to be Miguel Cabrera, the Detroit Tigers star who won the league’s triple crown by leading in batting average (. 330), home runs (44) and runs batted in (139).

It might seem as if these statistics make Cabrera, the first triple crown winner in either league since 1967, a shoo-in for the M.V.P. But most statistically minded fans would prefer that it go to another player, Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels.

The argument on Trout’s behalf isn’t all that complicated: he provided the greater overall contribution to his team. Trout was a much better defensive player than Cabrera, and a much better base runner. And if Cabrera was the superior hitter, it wasn’t by nearly as much as the triple crown statistics might suggest.

It is an argument enabled by the improved ability to measure different elements of the game – defense, base running, and situational hitting – that were once weak points of statistical analysis.

Shrīkrushna liberated the troubled masses from immorality, greed and bad tendencies by slaying the demonNarakasur, who was an icon of demonic attitude. Deepavali symbolises this conquest of Divine thoughts over evil tendencies. Today, unfortunately, Deepavali is celebrated just as a cultural festival, without an understanding of its spiritual context.

However, if people learn, appreciate and understand about this spiritual context then all the ills in society; caused by spiritual ignorance, carnal and bad tendencies, would get reduced and even the dominance of immoral people over the pious masses will subside.

Therefore, igniting the flame of one's soul with spiritual passion, by reducing all worldly attachments can be known as true "Deepavali."
The increased power of piousness will lend happiness to everyone. This is possible by sacrificing our carnal pleasures without any expectations. The Upanishads have advised to seek pleasure in the reduction of that very pleasure itself !

'God, through this Deepavali, please light the bright flame of doing every action without any expectations in our hearts.  We have surrendered ourselves unto you completely. Please give us the spiritually pure (Sattvik) intellect (sadbuddhi) and strength to spread these noble thoughts to everyone so that we can become like a single earthen lamp that ignites multiple lamps around it. Through this we would be graced to celebrate 'Deepavali' in its truest purpose and spirit. Wishing everybody a Blissful Deepavali!'

ISKANDAR MALAYSIA - Smart City Model

Smart planning: Glass panels are being widely used in the construction of the buildings to house Johor public agencies and departments in Kota Iskandar to allow natural light to stream in while reducing the usage of electricity in the buildings.

ISKANDAR Malaysia (IM) in Johor has been chosen as a Smart City Model for Malaysia and the world.

The selection took place during the first intersession meeting of the Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council (GSIAC) in July 2012, in San Jose, the US.

The GSIAC was formed by the Malaysian government and the New York Academy of Sciences in order to drive Malaysia’s effort to accelerate economic development through science, technology and innovation. It serves as an advisory panel to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and is composed of international experts drawn from industry, academic and the public sector.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive officer Datuk Ismail Ibrahim talked with The Star on the topics related to the Smart City project.
